KidDotCo were approached by travel bloggers and wanderlust junkies Bkpk.me to help bring ‘Lisbon in 100 bites’ to life. One half of Bkpk.me, Zara Quiroga is an avid writer, and extremely passionate about food – especially from her beloved home, Portugal. While on her travels she put together a comprehensive guide of the local cuisine. The guide is made up of 100 dishes divided in to three categories, petiscos (or starters), main meals and desserts. Believe me, she does know her stuff! Version one of the guide needed a complete brand overhaul and we were more than happy to give her some guidance on how to brand her product.
This was such and interesting brief we got set, we hadn’t had a great deal of experience in designing food themed eBooks, but once we were supplied the content our vision was clear. One thing we were sure about was Zara’s passion for her country, her writing and in particular her food! This really shone through in the way she wrote in her guide. Drawing on the traditions of Portuguese culture, we explored a rustic style commonly associated with home cooking – after all the Portuguese love cooking for the family and big groups. This included colour palette with a Mediterranean vibe. We combined this with wood textures and traditional raw Portuguese food to enhance the brand.
In terms of the typography, we chose a carefree script font ironically called ‘Wanderlust’ to complete the brand. We felt this font was perfect to create the books identity as well as using it for big headings and quotes weaved throughout the eBook. This guide was particularly personal to Zara and written from the heart, so we did out upmost to design something that represented that.
We also pitched the idea of a one page website that would be used to promote the guide. This we felt was instrumental in enhancing the brand. Additionally we created some online marketing material and social elements to promote the book. She also created some hardback versions to run as a competition on her social networks.
